{"id":7743,"date":"2015-01-27T06:22:52","date_gmt":"2015-01-27T11:22:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=7743"},"modified":"2015-01-26T18:35:08","modified_gmt":"2015-01-26T23:35:08","slug":"seizing-the-opportunity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=7743","title":{"rendered":"Seizing the opportunity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last summer, I wrote a brief blog post called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/j.mp\/1mnzNYE\" target=\"_blank\">Regulating the internet<\/a>&#8221; suggesting it may be worthwhile for some academic researchers to take a look at the impact of regulating internet content in Canada, from such perspectives as economic and social policy, cultural issues, etc.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Are we restricting the evolution of creative business models and innovation through regulation?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Internet Traffic Management <a href=\"http:\/\/j.mp\/9FUQHw\" target=\"_blank\">Regulatory Policy<\/a>\u00a0(Net Neutrality)<\/li>\n<li>Canada&#8217;s Anti-Spam Law (<a href=\"http:\/\/j.mp\/1xsKqNd\" target=\"_blank\">CASL<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>New Media Exemption <a href=\"http:\/\/j.mp\/1mnvdtn\" target=\"_blank\">Order<\/a><\/li>\n<li>NFL Mobile Content <a href=\"http:\/\/j.mp\/rZS7zT\" target=\"_blank\">Decision<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Others? (such as digital copyright, lawful access, etc.?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Yesterday, I saw an article by Brian Fung of the Washington Post, seeking to explain &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/j.mp\/1z3blR5\" target=\"_blank\">How the cable industry is trying to reshape the economics of the Internet<\/a>&#8220;. He writes, &#8220;As it waits for the regulatory shoe of net neutrality to drop next month, the cable industry is going on the offensive.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>As I read the article, it struck me that internet services in the United States could be on the verge of some very heavy handed regulation.<\/p>\n<p>In launching a countdown clock, <a href=\"http:\/\/j.mp\/1yJOxXM\" target=\"_blank\">American Enterprise Institute<\/a> asked, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/j.mp\/1BsDp18\" target=\"_blank\">Will February 26, 2015 mark the death of Internet freedom?<\/a>&#8220;, referring to the upcoming vote by the FCC on its Open Internet process. In the view of AEI, &#8220;Title II reclassification of ISPs would cripple our nation\u2019s dynamic and thriving Internet ecosystem.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If the US moves to apply new regulations and government intervention in internet access and network management and interconnection services, what opportunities might arise for Canada?<\/p>\n<p>Will Canada see such moves as an opportunity to lead or will Canada&#8217;s regulatory and policy authorities follow suit?<\/p>\n<p>A number of sessions at <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/CDNts\" target=\"_blank\">The 2015 Canadian Telecom Summit<\/a> [June 1-3 in Toronto] will be well suited to discuss these issues and more: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On Monday morning, June 1, a panel of world leading telecom policy economists and academics will be exploring &#8220;Competition in Telecom&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>That afternoon, another panel will examine &#8220;Cyber Security&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Tuesday morning, June 2, former Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff will be speaking about global internet governance in a talk entitled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/j.mp\/1wsimXd\" target=\"_blank\">One Internet or Thousands: Preserving the World Wide Web in a Diverse Globe<\/a>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li>That session will be followed by our always popular &#8220;Regulatory Blockbuster&#8221;, featuring Canada&#8217;s leading regulatory affairs personalities<\/li>\n<li>Wednesday morning, June 2, has a panel looking at &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/j.mp\/15aZ2HD\" target=\"_blank\">Internet of Things: Hyperconnectivity<\/a>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li>Wednesday afternoon explores the video revolution in a session we are calling &#8220;Coming to Any Screen Near You&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Our closing speaker that afternoon will be Dr. Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How can Canada seize opportunities for competitive advantage in the emerging digital economy?<\/p>\n<p>Be sure to join us at <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/CDNts\" target=\"_blank\">The 2015 Canadian Telecom Summit<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Early bird savings are available through February 28. <\/p>\n<p>Have you <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/CTS15R\" target=\"_blank\">registered<\/a> yet?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last summer, I wrote a brief blog post called &#8220;Regulating the internet&#8221;
