The hearing moves into its reply phase today and <a href=\"http:\/\/j.mp\/1HYsxfl\" target=\"_blank\">CPAC is streaming<\/a> the action from gavel to gavel.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday afternoon, I was listening to Open Media&#8217;s testimony when I heard a reference to nationalizing internet and tweeted a question:<\/p>\n<div align=center>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\">\n<p>Did <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OpenMedia_ca\">@OpenMedia_ca<\/a> just go beyond structural separation and endorse a call to nationalize the internet? Government control? <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/crtcwireline?src=hash\">#crtcwireline<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Mark Goldberg (@Mark_Goldberg) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Mark_Goldberg\/status\/539507567270318080\">December 1, 2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>A colleague <a href=\"http:\/\/j.mp\/1HYszUw\" target=\"_blank\">replied<\/a> &#8220;I do believe that is what I heard &#8211; but I am remote so perhaps it was lost in the medium.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rather than clarify, Open Media&#8217;s executive director responded with a personal attack:<\/p>\n<div align=center>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\">\n<p>My favorite telecom lobbyists &quot;Goldie&quot; is trying to use a citizen comment to misrep <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OpenMedia_ca\">@OpenMedia_ca<\/a> views at hearing. Gross! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/crtcwireline?src=hash\">#crtcwireline<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Steve Anderson (@Steve_Media) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Steve_Media\/status\/539529033344905217\">December 1, 2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>Looking beyond the personal swipes, I took this to mean that Open Media chose to distance its own views from those of its member who was quoted in their opening statement [<a href=\"http:\/\/j.mp\/1HYpYdl\" target=\"_blank\">transcript<\/a> line 8346]:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In fact some, as David B. of Rockaway, New Brunswick go as far to suggest: &#8220;The Internet is rapidly becoming an essential public service. It should be nationalized or rather internationalized as a non-profit service.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/j.mp\/1HYrJqE\" target=\"_blank\">Open Media claims<\/a> to &#8220;work toward informed and participatory digital policy&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p>Why is its executive director unwilling to engage in civil discourse to clarify its position &#8211; informing us about a key point of digital policy?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While travelling overseas, I have been trying to follow the CRTC&#8217;s wireline wholesale hearing taking place in the National Capital.
