{"id":7439,"date":"2014-09-02T16:47:21","date_gmt":"2014-09-02T20:47:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=7439"},"modified":"2014-09-02T16:47:21","modified_gmt":"2014-09-02T20:47:21","slug":"do-crtcs-numbers-add-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=7439","title":{"rendered":"Do CRTC&#8217;s numbers add up?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The CRTC issued a press release earlier today to announce &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/j.mp\/1qlCcog\" target=\"_blank\">CRTC publishes a citizen&#8217;s guide to participating<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>In the release, the CRTC said &#8220;According to Statistics Canada, communication services represent the fifth largest family expense for Canadian households.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In addition, this was highlighted in a section called &#8220;Quick Facts&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Canadians spend an average of $191\/month on communication products and services, the fifth largest family expense.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I tried to source these numbers from Statistics Canada, but could not reconcile them against published data. The CRTC tells me that the $191 figure comes from the soon-to-be released version of the Communications Monitoring Report. It represents a modest increase over the $185 spent a year earlier (2012) and $181 in 2011. To clarify, this figure represents average <em>household<\/em> spending, not spending by the average Canadian.<\/p>\n<p>According to a CRTC spokesperson, calling the amount a &#8220;family expense&#8221; was sufficiently clear for readers to understand that the press release was not talking about $191 per Canadian. Are we all clear on that point? Do you agree?<\/p>\n<p>It was more of a challenge to reconcile the statement that asserts communications services represent the fifth largest family expense.<\/p>\n<p>The latest <a href=\"http:\/\/j.mp\/1A2lfAs\" target=\"_blank\">Survey of Household Spending<\/a> from Statistics Canada reports annual spending by Canadian households. At $191 per month, we are talking about annualized spending in the order of $2,292. How does that rank against other Statistics Canada categories?<\/p>\n<p>The survey shows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Shelter ($15,811)<\/li>\n<li>Income taxes ($13,060)<\/li>\n<li>Transportation ($11,216)<\/li>\n<li>Food ($7,739)<\/li>\n<li>Personal Insurance ($4,272)<\/li>\n<li>Recreation ($3,773)<\/li>\n<li>Clothing ($3,461)<\/li>\n<li>Health care ($2,285)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It appears that communications is tied with health care in the 8th position.<\/p>\n<p>Can anyone reconcile the statement\u00a0&#8220;According to Statistics Canada, communication services represent the fifth largest family expense for Canadian households&#8221;?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The CRTC issued a press release earlier today to announce &#8220;CRTC publishes a citizen&#8217;s guide to participating&#8220;.
