{"id":606,"date":"2008-03-25T05:28:00","date_gmt":"2008-03-25T05:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=606"},"modified":"2017-01-25T10:31:02","modified_gmt":"2017-01-25T15:31:02","slug":"nyt-on-municipal-wifi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=606","title":{"rendered":"NYT on municipal WiFi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/03\/22\/us\/22wireless.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/graphics8.nytimes.com\/images\/misc\/nytlogo153x23.gif\" alt=\"NY Times\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>An article in last Saturday&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/03\/22\/us\/22wireless.html\">New York Times<\/a> talks about fading hopes for municipal wireless networks.<\/p>\n<p>According to the article, the momentum from announcements in Philadelphia, Chicago, Houston and others has sputtered, &#8220;tripped up by unrealistic ambitions and technological glitches.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The challenge has been to define a business model that works.<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"text-align: justify; color: #666666; font-size: 85%;\"><p>In Minneapolis, the Internet service provider agreed to build the network as long as the city committed to becoming an \u201canchor tenant\u201d by subscribing for a minimum number of city workers, like building inspectors, meter readers, police officers and firefighters.<\/p>\n<p>This type of plan is more viable, according to market analysts and city officials, because the companies paying to mount the routers and run the service are guaranteed a base number of subscribers to cover the cost of their investment.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some others advocate a model of complete municipal ownership, as if taxpayers shouldn&#8217;t worry about the economic viability of the business plan.<\/p>\n<p>Almost in passing, the NYT article noted that prices for internet services have been dropping below what municipal Wi-Fi providers were offering.<\/p>\n<p>It again raises the question of whether across the board government subsidies should be replaced with an <a href=\"https:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=631\">income-based<\/a> credit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An article in last Saturday&#8217;s New York Times talks about fading hopes for municipal wireless networks.
