{"id":580,"date":"2008-04-22T15:31:00","date_gmt":"2008-04-22T15:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=580"},"modified":"2017-01-25T09:45:19","modified_gmt":"2017-01-25T14:45:19","slug":"fcc-chair-agrees-no-new-rules-are-needed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=580","title":{"rendered":"FCC chair agrees no new rules are needed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20080422\/ap_on_hi_te\/internet_regulation_13\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/images\/fcclogowords.gif\" alt=\"FCC\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>A little more than a year ago, I <a href=\"https:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=1018\">wrote<\/a> that no additional laws are needed to protect the internet from discriminatory practices by internet access service providers.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20080422\/ap_on_hi_te\/internet_regulation_13\">told<\/a> the US Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee that his agency has all the authority it needs and that new legislation is unnecessary. He was speaking at a hearing on the future of the Internet.<\/p>\n<p>He reiterated the FCC&#8217;s Internet policy principles and included a comment on the application of network management:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"font-size: 85%; color: #666666; text-align: justify;\"><p>To encourage broadband deployment and preserve and promote the open and interconnected nature of the public Internet,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Consumers are entitled to access the lawful Internet content of their choice;<\/li>\n<li>Consumers are entitled to run applications and use services of their choice, subject to the needs of law enforcement;<\/li>\n<li>Consumers are entitled to connect their choice of legal devices that do not harm the network;<\/li>\n<li>Consumers are entitled to competition among network providers, application and service providers, and content providers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Commission explicitly noted that these principles were subject to reasonable network management.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The full text of his statement can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/hraunfoss.fcc.gov\/edocs_public\/attachmatch\/DOC-281690A1.pdf\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gstconferences.com\/pdf.gif\" border=\"0\" \/> here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A little more than a year ago, I wrote that no additional laws are needed to protect the internet from discriminatory practices by internet access service providers.
