{"id":4292,"date":"2011-01-20T06:50:03","date_gmt":"2011-01-20T11:50:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=4292"},"modified":"2011-01-19T11:41:49","modified_gmt":"2011-01-19T16:41:49","slug":"cracks-in-the-lobby","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=4292","title":{"rendered":"Cracks in the lobby?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dissident subgroups are appearing within two industry lobbying associations.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past few days, we have seen <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/dElpTq\" target=\"_blank\">Mobilicity<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/scr.bi\/es3tcM\" target=\"_blank\">Wind Mobile<\/a> take contrary positions to that of the CWTA in response to <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/fYcDdm\" target=\"_blank\">Manitoba&#8217;s examination of increased consumer protection rules<\/a> for mobile contracts.<\/p>\n<p>It is difficult to build a consensus opinion for any association consisting of market competitors. However, there is a marked difference in the expression of the dissenting viewpoints. Wind Mobile took aim at its competitors, as might be expected, talking about &#8220;The Big Three.&#8221; On the other hand, Mobilicity&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/dElpTq\" target=\"_self\">press release<\/a>\u00a0targets the association itself, mentioing &#8220;CWTA&#8221;\u00a06 times\u00a0 in the first 4 paragraphs.<\/p>\n<p>Last fall, we saw the emergence of the Canadian Network Operators Consortium (<a href=\"http:\/\/cnoc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">CNOC<\/a>), which appears to have a <a href=\"http:\/\/cnoc.ca\/pages\/membership_list\" target=\"_blank\">membership<\/a> with considerable overlap with the Canadian Association of Internet Providers (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cata.ca\/Communities\/caip\/CAIPMembershipList.html\" target=\"_blank\">CAIP<\/a>). The challenge for these organizations is to find sufficient common ground to justify a united front, recognizing the varying business interests of the membership.<\/p>\n<p>In such groups, is unanimous agreement required or can a majority vote determine whether the association attaches its seal to\u00a0a position? Where unanimity is not possible, should\u00a0the association stand down and have members respond on their own?<\/p>\n<p>CWTA President Bernard Lord will be a keynote speaker at <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/cts11\" target=\"_blank\">The 2011 Canadian Telecom Summit<\/a>, opening May 31 in Toronto.
