{"id":4211,"date":"2010-12-13T06:30:43","date_gmt":"2010-12-13T11:30:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=4211"},"modified":"2010-12-12T22:56:55","modified_gmt":"2010-12-13T03:56:55","slug":"a-mans-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=4211","title":{"rendered":"Losing ground on diversity?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What is happening to women in leadership in Canadian telecom?<\/p>\n<p>I was chatting with a colleague over the weekend\u00a0and she pointed out\u00a0shrinking numbers in the executive ranks of our major carriers.\u00a0I decided to check out her perception. Looking at the composition of the corporate leadership teams of Canada&#8217;s biggest communications providers,\u00a0one has to wonder if we have made enough progress with diversity development. There are\u00a0a couple exceptions but there are other companies that seem to be regressing from previous advances.<\/p>\n<p>Check out the executive listings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bce.ca\/en\/aboutbce\/executiveteams\/bellcanada\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">Bell<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bellaliant.ca\/english\/about\/management_team.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Bell Aliant<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cogeco.ca\/cable\/corporate\/cca\/about\/direction.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cogeco<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mts.ca\/portal\/site\/mts\/menuitem.d8394e2b43f4deb6a1720010408021a0\/?vgnextoid=a2aa447ba9741110VgnVCM1000001342a8c0RCRD\" target=\"_blank\">MTS Allstream<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rogers.com\/web\/Rogers.portal?_nfpb=true&amp;_windowLabel=investor_1_1&amp;investor_1_1_actionOverride=\/portlets\/consumer\/investor\/showGenericFlexibleZoneAction&amp;investor_1_1subAction=showRciSeniorLeadershipAction&amp;_pageLabel=IR_LANDING\" target=\"_blank\">Rogers<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/sasktel.ca\/about-us\/company-information\/executive-team\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Sasktel<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shaw.ca\/en-ca\/InvestorRelations\/CorporateGovernance\/Executive+Team.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Shaw<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/about.telus.com\/investors\/en\/investor\/leadership.html\" target=\"_blank\">TELUS<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/corpo.videotron.com\/site\/our-company\/team\/executive-team\/robert-depatie.jsp\" target=\"_blank\">Videotron<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I count just 13 women among the 83 listed executive leaders\u00a0 at these companies. An overwhelming preponderance of white males.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/national\/time-to-lead\/women-in-power\/part-1-why-the-executive-suite-is-the-final-frontier-for-women\/article1749955\/\" target=\"_blank\">Globe and Mail<\/a> had an article in October that discussed Canada&#8217;s poor record of women breaking out of &#8220;middle-management purgatory.&#8221;\u00a0The story was part of a series worth reading entitled: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/national\/time-to-lead\/women-in-power\/\" target=\"_blank\">Women in Power<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Research reported by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.engineerscanada.ca\/e\/pr_women.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Engineers Canada<\/a> suggests that there are signs of a decline in the percentage of women pursuing engineering compared to men. This should be a concern to all of us in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Are there factors that inhibit increased representation by women in our schools?<\/p>\n<p>Are we doing enough to ensure that the industry benefits from the rich diversity that defines Canada&#8217;s cultural mosaic? Why would companies\u00a0recruit from a restricted talent pool? Is there is sufficient diversity in the secondary school programs that lead to technology fields?<\/p>\n<p>As we look to drive increase digital literacy in Canada, we need to be sure that all Canadians are actively engaged to contribute to our digital future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is happening to women in leadership in Canadian telecom?
