{"id":401,"date":"2008-11-11T06:09:00","date_gmt":"2008-11-11T06:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=401"},"modified":"2017-01-24T20:58:24","modified_gmt":"2017-01-25T01:58:24","slug":"picking-up-the-pieces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=401","title":{"rendered":"Picking up the pieces"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As was anticipated in a number of reports, <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.nortel.com\/go\/news_detail.jsp?cat_id=-8055&amp;oid=100248517&amp;locale=en-US\">Nortel announced<\/a> further restructuring and job cuts yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>An article in the weekend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/servlet\/story\/RTGAM.20081107.wrnortel08\/BNStory\/Technology\/?page=rss&amp;id=RTGAM.20081107.wrnortel08\">Globe and Mail<\/a> questioned the wisdom of pre-announcing the intent to sell one its top performing divisions, the Metro Ethernet Networks group. Yesterday&#8217;s results confirmed that 3rd quarter sales have slipped and at least some of that has to be attributed to customer uncertainty about where the division is heading.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this fall, some had <a href=\"https:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=404\">speculated<\/a> that Huawei is among the most likely suitors.<\/p>\n<p>A challenge for Huawei in operating in North America is the need to establish a domestic supply chain. Huawei is able to send products produced in China into Canada or the United States. However, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bis.doc.gov\/uschinaexportrule.htm\">US export controls<\/a> puts some restrictions on shipping high tech items back to China.<\/p>\n<p>This adds a bit of a wrinkle into normal vendor &#8220;return and repair&#8221; of equipment that needs maintenance. How will Huawei work through the challenges as it ramps up its <a href=\"https:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=430\">operations in Canada<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>What impact might this have on Huawei&#8217;s ability to acquire parts of Nortel?
