{"id":3847,"date":"2010-08-30T06:22:11","date_gmt":"2010-08-30T10:22:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=3847"},"modified":"2017-01-24T13:34:40","modified_gmt":"2017-01-24T18:34:40","slug":"broadband-competition-at-stake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=3847","title":{"rendered":"Broadband competition at stake?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Later today, the CRTC will be releasing its decision on its Notice of Consultation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crtc.gc.ca\/eng\/archive\/2009\/2009-261.htm\">2009-261<\/a>,\u00a0<em>Proceeding to consider the appropriateness of mandating certain wholesale high-speed access services<\/em>, as <a href=\"https:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=3844\">I discussed<\/a> briefly last week. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crtc.gc.ca\/PartVII\/eng\/2009\/8663\/c12_200907321.htm\" target=\"_blank\">file<\/a> has been open\u00a0for a year and a half, triggered <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crtc.gc.ca\/eng\/archive\/2009\/2009-34.htm\" target=\"_blank\">initially by the CRTC<\/a> as a follow-up to a wholesale DSL access service decision.<\/p>\n<p>The proceeding was expanded by combining the issue with\u00a0a request in March 2009 by Cybersurf\u00a0to gain access to a mandated central office-based ADSL access service and\u00a0cable head-end network access service.<\/p>\n<p>There are some who have said that the decision will determine the viability of broadband competition. Will independent ISPs be able to compete if the CRTC does not rule in their favour. On the other side, the incumbent telephone companies have argued that the decision may determine the viability of fibre to the home investments in some communities.<\/p>\n<p>Later today, we will see how the Commission adjudicated between these strongly expressed warnings.<\/p>\n<p>Will Canada move to mandate more wholesale access to broadband facilities?
