{"id":3784,"date":"2010-07-30T07:04:30","date_gmt":"2010-07-30T11:04:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=3784"},"modified":"2010-07-30T09:18:16","modified_gmt":"2010-07-30T13:18:16","slug":"the-state-of-canadian-communications-2010","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=3784","title":{"rendered":"The state of Canadian communications 2010"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday, the CRTC published its 2010 <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/a4DWk8\" target=\"_blank\">Communications Monitoring Report<\/a> [<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/a4DWk8\" target=\"_blank\">pdf<\/a> 7MB], the latest compendium of the state of the industry, as it stood at the end of the year 2009.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview, I\u00a0observed to <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/cppt8L\" target=\"_blank\">Network World Canada<\/a> that the report shows that 75% of Canadians now enjoy residential internet service; two thirds of Canadians subscribe to broadband. But the CRTC&#8217;s report also shows that 95% of Canadians have access to at least one\u00a0terrestrial broadband service supplier; 96% have access to a mobile broadband service and virtually everyone can access broadband when satellite-based service is included.<\/p>\n<p>Yet one in three Canadians has not signed up for broadband.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What\u2019s holding them back? That to me is a far more important question for the government and policy makers than trying to figure out how to reach the three or four per cent that don\u2019t have a wireline broadband choice.<\/p>\n<p>Why aren\u2019t we focusing on those folks?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I continued\u00a0by wondering if there are too many households that don\u2019t have computers.\u00a0I suggested that\u00a0perhaps there should be a program to encourage computer ownership, especially where there are school-aged children in the household.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a digital divide that isn\u2019t a rural and remote problem..<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday, the CRTC published its 2010 Communications Monitoring Report [pdf 7MB], the latest compendium of the state of the industry, as it stood at the end of the year 2009.
