{"id":356,"date":"2009-01-08T06:59:00","date_gmt":"2009-01-08T06:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=356"},"modified":"2020-06-21T10:02:32","modified_gmt":"2020-06-21T14:02:32","slug":"beaming-directly-to-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=356","title":{"rendered":"Beaming directly to you"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Monday, Peter Nowak wrote a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/technology\/story\/2009\/01\/05\/tech-ces.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">preview piece<\/a> about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ces.tech\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Consumer Electronics Show<\/a>, which opens today in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n<p>In the Monday article, Peter observed that last year&#8217;s show saw participation by a number of first time exhibitors, including General Motors and content producers NBC Universal and Sony Pictures.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the industry observers questioned why the content companies are there:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"font-size: 85%; color: #666666; text-align: justify;\"><p>They are awkward at this point. They think they need to be there because of multiplatform potential and it&#8217;s largely exploratory. But what can you really buy from NBC Universal except movies online?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I wrote yesterday about <a href=\"https:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=357l\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">disintermediation<\/a>, which helps to understand why content owners, developers and producers might want to establish direct consumer relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Studios going directly with consumers can cut out two layers of intermediaries: broadcasters and broadcast distributors (cablecos, DBS, telcos).<\/p>\n<p>In an ultra high speed world, electronic information distribution looks very different.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"text-decoration: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.telecomsummit.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">The 2009 Canadian Telecom Summit<\/span><\/a> will be looking at these kinds of issues (among many more concerns).
