{"id":3234,"date":"2010-02-22T06:17:02","date_gmt":"2010-02-22T11:17:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=3234"},"modified":"2010-02-19T13:04:11","modified_gmt":"2010-02-19T18:04:11","slug":"the-broadband-investment-paradox","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mhgoldberg.com\/blog\/?p=3234","title":{"rendered":"The broadband investment paradox"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A\u00a0number of recent announcements of projects to deliver ultra-high speed internet have surfaced in recent weeks, ranging from Bell&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/bCrrr3\" target=\"_blank\">FTTH roll-out<\/a>\u00a0in Quebec City, Novus 200 Mbps <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/aMY2Lh\" target=\"_blank\">offering in Vancouver<\/a> and Shaw planning <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/bVgI6I\" target=\"_blank\">gigabit trials<\/a> in its territory.<\/p>\n<p>All of these point to a climate of substantial investment driven by competition looking for differentiation by enhancing the internet speeds available to their customers.<\/p>\n<p>The investments aren&#8217;t limited to just urban centres. Barrett Xplore has announced [<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/c3XmOD\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/cRYldQ\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>]\u00a0investments in next generation high throughput satellite capacity\u00a0in order to bring advanced services to rural and remote markets.<\/p>\n<p>As the CRTC works through the filings in the essential services <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/9LTqAt\" target=\"_blank\">proceeding<\/a>, and the deferral account implementation plans [3 files: <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/d4uYpV\">implementation<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/ds9ZwT\" target=\"_blank\">competitor access<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/alWrCd\" target=\"_blank\">consumer rebate<\/a>], it needs to be cognizant of\u00a0potential unintended consequences of its policies: chilling a fragile investment climate.<\/p>\n<p>Competition\u00a0appears to be\u00a0working, with facilities based carriers driving investment in more advanced broadband facilities, delivering faster speeds to consumers.
