I think they are worth sharing.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca\/index-eng.htm\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC)<\/a> says fraud and cybercrime cost Canadians more than $530m in 2022. A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/business\/2023\/03\/25\/heres-why-youre-still-getting-so-many-annoying-scam-phone-calls-and-four-recent-developments-to-stop-them.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">article by Christine Dobby (Toronto Star)<\/a> says those annoying telephone scam calls represented more than 10% of that total, $57M.<\/p>\n<p>HomeEquity Bank&#8217;s campaign shows how easy it is to create and run a convincing deepfake scam. Using readily accessible AI technology, the series has a deepfake impersonator appearing as actor Keanu Reeves. Thieves have used Reeves&#8217;s name in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ktla.com\/news\/money-smart\/keanu-reeves-i-know-its-not-you-fraudsters-pretend-to-be-celebrities-in-scam-attempts\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">frequently reported<\/a> celebrity romance scam.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: right; padding: 10px;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"448\" height=\"252\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GLll_jfHlcg\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The HomeEquity Bank deepfake takes viewers through three common scams to raise awareness of some of the most frequent methods of fraud targeting Canadians. <\/p>\n<p>The series demonstrates how simple it can be for almost anyone to be transformed into a convincing impersonator. &#8220;The deepfake impersonator recorded the videos virtually from his home, and didn&#8217;t need any special cameras or devices to create the effect.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>HomeEquity Bank&#8217;s target market skews toward more senior client base, with its reverse mortgage product. The elderly are a frequent target for these scams.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: right; padding: 10px;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"448\" height=\"252\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UOgPcBmHCIk\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The bank created the series as a follow up to its 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homeequitybank.ca\/media\/press-releases\/catch-the-scam\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Catch the Scam&#8221;<\/a> campaign with Frank W. Abagnale, the con man and imposter featured in the Stephen Spielberg film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0264464\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Catch Me If You Can.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>That <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chip.ca\/catch-the-scam\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2020 campaign<\/a> featured 4 videos, highlighting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Grandparent Scam<\/li>\n<li>The CRA Scam<\/li>\n<li>The Lottery Scam<\/li>\n<li>The Romance Scam <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Better education helps to unmask the scams, making them less profitable. As HomeEquity Bank writes, &#8220;We should see sharing our own experiences with scams as a means of better protecting us all. That means breaking down the stigma that comes with being the target of a scam.
