After years of dealing with the glut of capacity creating during the boom years of the tech bubble, carriers are talking about needing to invest in optical equipment again, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/yahoo.reuters.com\/news\/articlehybrid.aspx?storyID=urn:newsml:reuters.com:20060928:MTFH76890_2006-09-28_16-45-49_N28257274\">Nortel CTO John Roese<\/a>. Will Nortel be the supplier of choice? I suspect Lucent \/ Alcatel will try to get in their way.<\/p>\n<p>Roese and Nortel President Mike Zafirovsky were speaking at a gathering of Ottawa technology executives at a joint <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocri.ca\/\">OCRI<\/a> \/ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itac.ca\">ITAC<\/a> breakfast meeting on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocri.ca\/news\/2006articles\/obj_sept2806.mht\">Ottawa Business Journal<\/a> story about the breakfast, the two Nortel execs detailed three trends that offer Nortel an opportunity to take the industry lead:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">hyperconnectivity<\/span>: where individual consumers are always plugged into the Internet with enabled devices;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">network-aware applications<\/span>: where network applications are easily tailored to needs;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">true broadband<\/span>: defined as a seamless handoff to provides uninterrupted mobility between home, office and points between over high-speed networks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Keep in mind, this list mixes applications and underlying technologies. Consumers are not likely to care about hyperconnectivity or true broadband. These are considerations of what goes on behind the curtain to enable sizzling applications &#8211; as yet undefined.<\/p>\n<p>Will Nortel be able to seize on these opportunities?
