The Globe and Mail<\/a> reported on last week’s announcement<\/a> by Competition Bureau chief Sheridan Scott<\/a> that the bureau is more receptive to claims of efficiency benefits (synergies) in its assessments of mergers.<\/p>\n

In the case of Superior Propane and ICG, the resultant merger placed 70% of the market into the merged entity, but the companies demonstrated that the synergy savings outweighed the impact on competitive pricing.<\/p>\n

70% of the market in the hands of one player? Hmmm.<\/p>\n

The Competition Bureau also issued a draft information bulletin<\/a> <\/a> seeking consultation<\/a> on the issue of abuse of dominance in the telecom sector. Parties have until December 29 to submit comments.<\/p>\n

Could we expect that consolidation of ILECs would be aproved?<\/p>\n
